CSGO is Officially Back on Steam (2026)

March 4, 2026Updated March 4, 2026MattMatt

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive just made a surprise return to Steam as a standalone game — three years after Valve replaced it with Counter-Strike 2. CS:GO appeared on March 3, 2026, with a brand-new App ID and unlisted status, giving players direct access to the classic experience without needing the legacy beta branch.

CS:GO Returns with a New Steam App ID

csgo is back

The game that shaped competitive FPS for over a decade now exists as a separate entry from CS2. CSGO is back on Steam with App ID 4465480, and you can find it here on Steam. This standalone version means you no longer need to download beta branches or use workarounds to play the Counter-Strike classic that millions fell in love with.

Fans claim that: “They’ve re-added it back as a separate game, so using the legacy branch isn’t needed anymore.” Between 8,000 and 20,000 players jumped online immediately after the news broke, showing just how much demand still exists for the original.

Unlisted Status — Here’s the Catch

Valve quietly made CS:GO unlisted on the Steam store. That means it won’t appear in search results. You need the direct link to find it. As one Reddit user pointed out, the store page reads: “At the request of the publisher, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is unlisted on the Steam store and will not appear in search.”

There’s been no official statement from Valve about the return. Content creator TheWarOwl summarized it well: “CS:GO is not supported by Valve, so they are not hosting servers, there will be no additional updates.” This is preservation, not a relaunch.

Community Servers Only — No Official Matchmaking

The standalone CS:GO has no official matchmaking servers. You can only play with bots or on community servers. Initial reports showed the in-game server browser wasn’t working, but players discovered that Steam’s client-side server browser lists CS:GO community servers separately after a restart.

To join servers manually, open the developer console and use the connect command with a server IP. Check our full CS2 console commands guide if you need help enabling the console. Some Linux users also reported compatibility issues at launch.

Skins and Achievements Don’t Transfer

Here’s the biggest disappointment: your CS2 skins don’t carry over. Unlike when CSGO skins transferred to CS2 automatically in 2023, this standalone version runs a completely separate inventory. If you’re looking for ways to kit out your loadout, you might want to check out free CSGO skins options.

The 100+ Steam achievements from the original CS:GO are also gone. CS2 famously launched with just a single achievement, and this standalone version doesn’t restore the originals. As one player put it: “I’m just upset that all the achievements are gone, but I’m glad it’s finally back.”

Missing Game Modes Spark Nostalgia

The return has reignited conversations about features that were lost in the CS2 transition. Many players miss modes like Arms Race, which was a fan favorite in CS:GO but never made it to Counter-Strike 2. One Reddit user wrote: “I didn’t like that they removed Arms Race, which was my favourite mode.”

This preserved version is a snapshot of CS:GO as it existed right before the CS2 launch in 2023 — a “forever shadow,” as TheWarOwl described it. Communities that enjoy classic modes and custom maps can now access them without the massive CS2 download.

Why Valve Did This — SDK and Modding Benefits

One compelling theory from Reddit user u/doublah: “This is so CS:GO SDK games like Classic Offensive can be released, and mods like Momentum Mod won’t need 90GB CS2 plus CS:GO.” Having a separate App ID streamlines development for any project built on CS:GO’s Source 1 engine.

This also benefits creators working with surf maps and other community content who prefer Source 1’s behavior and performance characteristics. Separating the games at the platform level was a logical move for Valve’s modding ecosystem.

How to Access CS:GO Right Now

Want to jump back into the classic? Here’s how:

  1. Visit the direct store link — search won’t find it since it’s unlisted
  2. Add to your library and download the standalone version
  3. Use Steam’s server browser (restart Steam if servers don’t show up)
  4. Or play offline with bots using bot commands

The game is free if you already owned CS:GO. Check your Steam account — it should be available to install right away.

The Bigger Picture: Game Preservation Wins

CS:GO joining CS 1.6 and Counter-Strike: Source as a preserved standalone title is a win for gaming history. Counter-Strike’s legacy stretches back over 25 years, and each version still maintains active communities.

As TheWarOwl said: “This should have been done in the first place, and would have shown a lot of good will towards the people who love this game.” Whether you plan to revisit CS:GO for nostalgia or you’re a dedicated community server player, having it as a proper standalone is a step in the right direction.
